Cometary Knots
COMETARY KNOTS AROUND A
DYING STAR

They resemble tad poles,
Or even sperm in the uterus
Seeking for the egg,
Or a wind socket,
Or a feeling you get
When someone jets their face
Into yours and starts
Yelling so hard you know
You will spend the next month
Kicking doors and cursing;
Or those flaming sparks that drop
After fire works fade,
Or minnows fighting their way
Up a swift and  tough stream;

Once on a windswept bridge
I saw a woman whose hair
Blew backwards like these things;
As she reached up to grab it
Tears flowed down her cheeks
As if she had just  had a quarrel
And resolved never more
To endure love's turmoil.
In her knotted heart, she knew
An excess of cometary knotting,
And in so far as I knew
From my own private hurting
There was not much anyone could do
Except hold onto her being.
Yet, who can tell for certain
Why our deep tears are pouring?
When it comes to things like this
We do not even understand
Why an end can seem unending.
All the great eye of the Hubble
Tells us is that two gases are colliding,
And each
knot fills a space
Twice the size of our Solar System.
The place where they burn
In our fifteen billion year old sky
Is not even a speck
To eyes filled with earthly yearning.
